Ken Shamrock Pre-Pride interview
Ken Shamrock is a name that is universally recognized as one of the first Americans to compete in MMA and NHB events worldwide. He parlayed his success in the NHB arena and made a transition to professional wrestling. After a few years in that sport he burst back onto the NHB scene with his devastating knockout of Alexander Otsuka at the last Pride event. ADCC reporter Rafiel Torre was able to watch Ken along with several members of the Lions Den train the day before Pride 10. He asked Ken about his upcoming match with Fujita and the controversy about Don Frye at the Pride rules meeting and Press conference.

Ken, you are fighting Fujita tomorrow, how do you think that fight is going to go?

I don’t know. I’ll just have to go out there and see what he does. If he shoots, or throws punches. Who knows? It could happen any way. I have been really working hard o my standup, and it paid off when I knocked out Alexander at the last Pride. Maybe that will happen again. Or we could see a submission. He might take me down. I could see that happening. I’ll try to go for a submission if that happens.

He is quite a lot larger than you. If he does take you down, does that mean we will see a lot of guard work from you?

No, I’ll just use a lot of movement. I don’t like the guard. I’ll use a lot of open guard, feet on the hips. I’ll take side mount or even give up my back before I go to guard. I’ll give up a lot of things to keep it moving.

You signed a two fight deal with Pride. Is this the last time we will see you in this show?

No, I think I’ll fight two more times after this. I don’t know who the opponents will be yet. I love this sport. I do this for a living. I am enjoying myself.

You left the WWF a while back. After your fights in Pride will you return?

Yes, it might not be in the WWF or somewhere else, but I will be in Pro wrestling. I want to stay around NHB for a long time. If not fighting then training my crew. I broke my cherry in the pro-wrestling game in the WWF, but other organizations want me as well. Who knows what can happen?

Speaking of Pro-Wrestling. At yesterdays Pride Rules meeting, Don Frye, who now works in Japan as a pro wrestler said a few things about you and almost got into a physical confrontation with one of your lions den members. You left the rules meeting early before any of this happened. Were you expecting something to happen?

I figured as much. I have a fight coming up. He is working Fujita’s corner so I thought something was up. I had to train anyway and I didn’t need the headache. So I left.

I didn’t realize it would go as far as it did. It was kind of like the Mark Hall incident. What the hell have I done to these guys? All I did was open doors for people. When I went into the WWF, people said that I sold out. I was a traitor. Well hey it worked out and then everyone said. "Hey great move". Now everyone is following me. I make a return to NHB and now people are trying to jump me. I figured what Otsuka and Fujita did was fine. They went through an established organization. People like Don Frye and Mark Hall?

Where do they get this stuff? Frye says I am a pussy and a coward, I lie to my fans. I don’t lie to anyone. I fight my fights and never bad mouth anyone. For Don Frye t come out and say what he is saying. After all the hard work I went through to come back to this sport, then he has no respect for the business.

Some of the Lions Den members stayed behind after you had left. Your students showed their loyalty to you and Tre Tellingham vs Don Frye almost happened at the meeting. Do you think it is pro-wrestling hype or do you think this man realy wants a piece of you?

I don’t know. Don Frye has brought my brother Frank into it. He has brought my dad into it. He said I did things to him. What Don said is an outright lie. He is just trying any way he can to get me to fight. Hall came up to me at King of the Cage and basically attacked me and I am the one being sued. If I beat up Don Frye and smash his face into the cement in self defense he will proboblly try to sue me to. I don’t say I am a badass. I am not saying that I am the baddest man in the world. It was name that ABC used when they did a special on me along time ago. The WWF used it as well. I don’t claim to be the best fighter in the world nor have I ever. For him to say these things just shows he does not know what he is doing or who he is dealing with.

In our interview with him right after the incident he said he wants to fight you in Pride. Would you fight him there?

Absolutely not. He messed that up by acting the way he has. Plus this guy has brought my family into it. Why should he get a big payday? Don Frye is trying to humiliate me, my family and my fighters. If it is just about fighting me. Come to my school, no problem. Or if he comes up to me on the street and lays hands on me, then I will defend myself. But as of now. Sorry Don no payday for you.

Don ‘The Predator’ Frye calls out Ken Shamrock at Pride Rules meeting

Not 10 minutes after the verbal exchange between Don Frye and Lions Den fighter Tre Tellingham, ADCC reporter Rafiel Torre was able to interview Frye about the incedent and why it came about. One thing for sure, Frye makes it abundantly clear that he wants Shamrock, and he wants him bad enough to fight him anywhere. Even at a press conference!

Don, you just had a shouting match with Tre Tellingham, a lions den member over his instructor Ken Shamrock. Why are you here in the first place?

I have been pro-wrestling in New Japan pro-wrestling here in Japan now for the last three years and I am a cornerman for Fujita for this event.

Are you trying to get into the Pride show yourself?

I am if it gets me a fight with Shamrock, because I think he is a prick.

What exactly happened that made you and Tre exchange words and almost fists?

Tre is so far up Shamrocks ass he has teethmarks on his forehead! He is just trying to stir stuff up with me to get in better with Ken.

If you do get to fight Shamrock is this the show you want to do it in, Pride that is?

Sure it’s the biggest show in the world. I’d actually like to fight him in the next Pride in October. Actually I ‘d like to fight him as soon as possible so the pussy can’t back out of it.

So are you just doing pro-wrestling now and nothing else?

Yeah, that’s exactly it. I do want to come back and beat the hell out of Ken Shamrock though. I have no respect for the guy. He has no respect for the sport, I think he is full of ###### and he has been lying to the fans for four years. Hell, he can’t even finish a tournament. He runs around saying he is the baddest man on the planet. I think the dumbest man on the planet is more like it.

You are a lot bigger than when you fought in the UFC, what are weighing in at now?

Right now about 235. Basically this is my job. I get paid to work out so it is a lot easier to do that and not hold down another job as well. If you are going to fight, whether it be in NHB, boxing or Pro-wrestling it’s a 100% commitment.

Do you enjoy pro-wrestling.

Man, I love it. I would do only that except I want to come back to NHB just to beat Shamrock and make him look like the fool he is. That’s the only reason I want to come back and that is really the only fight I want.

Mark Hall has said some things that you told us that you would like to address.

Yeah I would. Mark Hall is full of ######. He is a publicity seeker. He attacked Shamrock at King of the Cage, he talks bull###### about an imaginary work that we were supposed to have had. I have heard so many stories from Mark Hall and everyone is different. Anybody that believes that ###### is dumber than he is. I think he is just been milking his 15 minutes of fame for the last four years. He got his ass kicked in the UFC and he is pretty much done. Hell I’d actually like to fight him to. Hey I’ll fight him in King of the Cage and the loser has to admit he is a liar. I’m just tired of his lies.
