Why the Hate?
May 8, 2008
I was sitting here thinking to myself the other day.
As a columnist, I have seen people in the internet wrestling world bash me, and others like me on a constant, and consistent basis. They claim we, do not know what we are talking about, and we basically have no buisness talking or writting about such things.
The question I keep asking myself, is "Why, the hell not?"
Think about it like this.
In the NFL Adam Schefter in my opinion is one of the absolute best, in the buisness when it comes to breaking the news, reports, basically everything you can possibly think of. Now ask yourself this question. Does it help a team to sell tickets when he breaks the report of the next big player being traded or signed? Of course it does, when people know what may, and can happen ahead of time it gathers much more interest. Therefore channels like ESPN, and NFL Network gather more rating waiting for the next big piece of news to be broken.
What makes the wrestling buisness any different?
I am well aware that there are indeed quite a few idiots that write out there, I have seen it first hand some of the things certain people who I won't mention say, and I can understand from a wrestlers standpoint how some of that may deem offesnive since I have done it myself. But when a man or woman breaks a story, or possible spoiler prior to Raw or Smackdown, and it alone gathers at least one more viewer, both the columnist and WWE themselves win. The columnist looks smart, WWE gathered more viewers.
So again, I ask. What in the hell is wrong with columnist like that, why do certain wrestlers insist on bashing us?
I bring up Adam Schefter again, he breaks the news about a Safety getitng paid a lucritive amount of money, another Safety in the league is nearing the end of his contracy and asks for similar money and gets it, because of the exposure his reports gathered.
The way I look at it, when someone like me breaks a story and WWE gathers more viewers at that stories peak hour, WWE is winning, and instead of simply thanking us for more exposure, or even leaving us alone. We get bashed.
Hell, if you think about it. WWE finally beat WCW in the Monday Night Ratings War because WCW released the spoiler to Raw on their show, and everyone promptly tuned to WWE to watch Mankind win the WWE Title for the first time. Did WWE bash WCW? No, they watched WCW take a tailspin right straight into becoming another property for Vinnie Mac to claim ownership to. That may never have happened had it not been due to "reporting."
Personally, if reports help the buisness and gather more interest towards it, I don't see why they should complain, if they spent more time doing what they do, and less time openely bashing us, the buisness would improve even further, and personally if they want to bash us, they can go to hell.
So, I don't think I will ever come to terms with being bashed by people within the buisness just because I choose to write about a thing I enjoy.
